What is Riverside’s Wireless Internet Service?
Riverside and AT&T are partnering to provide wireless access to the Internet using standard wireless hardware and technology that is commonly deployed in laptops and some desktop computers. The initiative is rolling out in phases as the necessary network equipment gets installed around Riverside. There are two networks available to the public– a FREE service called “attmetrofree” with advertising intended for general usage and a PAID service called “attmetrowifi” that is targeted at business and other users who want higher performance (faster data speed), less advertising and VPN capability. In addition there is a Public Safety component that is not available to the general public. We call this initiative the SmartRiverside Wireless Network Service.

Is this available at my home or office?
The service is currently available in the Orange Terrace Parkway area, with other areas in the city rolling out in July and August. Please refer to the map above for additional go-live dates. For more information please contact the City Call Center at 951-826-5311 (311).

How do I connect to the FREE service?

First, you need a WiFi-enabled computer. Most laptops and some desktop PCs sold today already have a built-in wireless capability. If you've received a PC from SmartRiverside, you should have received a WiFi Access Device.  If you received your PC from SmartRiverside and did not receive your WiFi device, please call 951-351-6190.  You can also get a relatively inexpensive add-on for older computers from many computer-related retail stores.

To connect to the FREE wireless network, users will select the "attmetrofree" network ID when searching available wireless networks on their computer. "attmetrofree" is the free, ad-based service. Once connected, users will open their browser and see a registration page where they are asked to register. Users will only need to register once, the first time they log on. On subsequent visits, users will be instantly connected to the Internet.

The City of Riverside 311 Call Center staff can also fax or mail a basic connection instruction document to residents that do not have any other way to connect to the Internet to get support.  The document sent will depend on what operating system their computer uses – Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows Vista, Macintosh (Mac).  Call 951-826-5311 for more information.
Why do I get Advertising messages when I connect?

When surfing the web with the free service, users will see an ad banner at the top of their browser page with local and regional advertising sponsors who help pay for the network and allow AT&T to offer its WiFi service for free to the residents and visitors. If you do not want to see the Ads you must subscribe to the PAID service.

How much does the PAID Riverside AT&T Metro WiFi Service cost?

Paid service plans will have less advertising and will vary in price depending on the service plan. Initially, there will be a 1-Day pass that provides access for 24 consecutive hours at $7.99 and a Weekly pass allowing connection for 7 consecutive days at $15.99.

How do I connect to the PAID WiFi Network Service?

To connect to the PAID wireless network, users will select the “attmetrowifi” network ID when searching available wireless networks on their computer. Once connected, users will open their browser and see a registration page where they are asked to register. Users will only need to register once, the first time they log on. On subsequent visits, users will be instantly connected to the Internet.

I connect Ok when outdoors but have trouble from inside my home/office. What's wrong?

Our service provider indicates that in these instances, additional equipment may be required to connect to the wireless service. Please contact your PC provider for more information and to see if you need additional hardware.
