Who: The mission of the Coalition for Common Ground is to build a more inclusive community that recognizes and values cultural and religious diversity. The Coalition for Common Ground is a 501(c)3 community-based corporation and was founded in 1996 under the leadership of Grace Slocum and Joy Defenbaugh. The Coalition for Common Ground initiates and supports programs that encourage collaboration and cooperative action among people from different cultures, ethnic groups, economic backgrounds, and professions.
Coalition’s Technology Initiative is a monthly computer “Give-a-Way” which consist of a refurbished computer with Internet capabilities at each park. Participants compete for a computer by writing an essay on a variety of topics per month. The contest is judged by a Riverside police officer who listens to the essays that is read by the youth in front of his or her peers. Once the youth wins the competition, the police officer helps the youth's parents load the computer in the car and often escort the family home.
