Free computer training classes expanded
Starting in May, SmartRiverside's Digital Inclusion
Program will expand its free computer training classes from
community centers to three Riverside schools.
The city nonprofit agency's program offers eight hours of
computer instruction to residents, who receive a free used
desktop computer upon completion of the training.
The program is an effort to include all Riversiders,
regardless of income, in the city's upcoming free Wi-Fi
Internet program. SmartRiverside has given away more than
1,000 computers so far.
On Saturday and May 17, classes will be held 8:30 a.m. to
12:30 p.m. at Norte Vista High School, 6585 Crest Ave. For
information, call 951-826-6450.
Starting May 7, weekly classes will be held 6-8 p.m. on
Wednesdays at Highland Elementary School, 700 Highlander
Drive, and at Victoria Elementary School, 2910 Arlington
Ave. For information, call 951-788-7135, ext. 80307.
SmartRiverside officials said subsequent classes would
follow the same schedule each month.
Free computers connecting Riverside residents to better
futures
Riverside is helping its residents become
smarter.
That's the goal of Smart Riverside, the
city's nonprofit agency that works to encourage using high
technology and bridge the digital divide. While the "haves"
tend to be technologically savvy, often the "have-nots"
don't even know how to turn on a computer.

Riverside Wi-Fi system should be operating citywide by
May
By the end of May, the free citywide Wi-Fi
network should be up and running throughout Riverside, an
AT&T official and city official said this week. It will
allow users of computers or personal digital assistants with
the appropriate wireless device to connect to the Internet,
via radio waves, from most of the built-out portions of the
city, whether users are at sidewalk cafes, shopping centers
or other locations.
Logged In to Luck
Hermelinda Zavala said her 9-year-old son
Nicholas Zavala has always been rather fortunate.
For example, years ago when the family lived
in Placentia, they would eat at a Spire's restaurant, and
the employees there would often give young Nicholas stuffed
animals or treats.
"He has a lot of luck," Zavala said in
Spanish.
Nicholas is the lucky recipient of another
prize: a brand-new Dell personal computer, courtesy of the
SmartRiverside program, the city of Riverside's nonprofit
organization which encourages technology innovation and use
in the city.
